Happy New Year

In lieu of fancy New Year’s Eve celebrations, Keith and I opted to ring in 2009 at home — he in the woodshop turning a Bradford pear log into a tiny bowl, I on the couch in fleece pajamas crocheting a fingerless glove to match the one I finished last week. Actually, we never go to fancy celebrations. We don’t even host them; although for a few years we’d host a couple of friends (a friend-couple?), and Keith’s sister and her now-husband, and we’d just have yummy food and booze and play games, with Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve special on for the midnight countdown. Then we’d all pass out around 12:30. That is the story I will get to tell my grandchildren about the good ole days of yore.

This year, it was pretty much just me, my yarn, Ryan Seacrest and a champagne flute filled with Sprite. I called Keith in from the shop a few minutes before midnight, but he missed the ball drop by half a minute on account of our house clocks, which are a few minutes behind Times Square. Five minutes later, he was back outside, even though Jesse McCartney was performing. I’m just being facetious.

So as I sat counting yarn-overs and decreases, trying to figure out what I’d done for the first glove (I didn’t write the pattern down, dash it all), my mind wandered back over the past year. Largely, 2008 seems to have been a year of trying and not finishing/being unable to finish, or considering but not trying, although we do have a newly renovated bathroom, which really has nothing to do with anything. Still, I thought, I feel hopeful, optimistic — as I think many people do — about the year to come. Perhaps this will be the year of actually achieving all those big goals. And then I started craving a grilled cheese sandwich. One slice of yellow American slightly melted between two buttery, lightly toasted slices of melt-in-your-mouth tender white bread — crispy on the outside, but still a little soft on the inside. Cut into halves on the diagonal. Did I even eat a grilled cheese sandwich in 2008?! I can’t remember. I think maybe not. I might not get back to the gym this month, but grilled cheese? I think that’s doable.
