Rainier cherries & shortbread

I love it when the stars align to make summer heavenly: the humidity is low, the air is cool(er than normal), vacation is imminent…and Rainier cherries are available.

Have mercy, I love them. It’s the only fruit I’ve eaten that I can’t imagine improving — except of course with ice cream, but even then you can’t plop them on top of just any old ice cream, and even then it seems that it’s more about improving the ice cream than the cherries. Rainier cherries are nearly perfect.

They also make me think of shortbread. That’s not to say that a lot of other things don’t also make me think of shortbread, but when Keith presented the box of blushing beauties, my mind immediately thought of butter. Sugar. Vanilla. And Rainier cherries.

With what was left of the crema ice cream? With cinnamon folded in? Each so simple, so pure in flavor, so perfectly balanced. Yes, yes, yes.
